Travel Nursing presents a unique interview experience from your typical setting. Most interviews will be via telephone or a video conferencing platform. This may be your only and best opportunity to ask the questions that are important to you. Here is VERO RN’s Interview Guide for Travel Nurses to help you prepare and perform well during your interview:
-Research the facility: Take some time to research the facility you will be interviewing with. Look up their website and read reviews from other nurses. There are several groups on platforms such as Facebook that could be a good source of other nurses’ past experiences. These steps should help gain a sense of the work environment.
–Review your resume and cover letter: (Check out VERO RN’s Resume Tips). You will want to be prepared to discuss the experience listed on your resume and cover letter. Have some prepared answers ready for common questions about your nursing background and qualifications.
–Be familiar with your current and previous specialties: Depending on your specialty, you may be asked questions about your current and past experiences regarding specific procedures, equipment, medications, and EHRs you are familiar with. Make sure you are up to date with current standards and best practices.
–Prepare questions to ask: As previously mentioned, due to the nature of the interview process you will want to be prepared with a list of questions to ask the interviewer. These questions can help you gain a better understanding of the facility, the work environment, and the job requirements. Be specific. Should nurse-to-patient ratios be of importance to you, make sure to ask.
–Practice your active communication skills: It is important to practice your communication skills before the interview. Try to speak clearly and confidently, and make sure you are actively listening to the interviewer’s questions. Engagement is key during the interview process as it shows that you are actively participating in the conversation.
-Highlight your flexibility and adaptability: As a travel nurse, one of the most important attributes is your flexibility to shifts and adaptability to the possibility of floating to other units. Be sure to highlight these skills during the interview.
–Follow up after the interview: After the interview, send an email to express your appreciation for the opportunity and to remind the interviewer of your interest in the job.
